Ports on the Nevis Mail Server

This is a quick guide to configuring a mail reader for the Nevis mail server. If you need more details, try the configure mail guide.

Mail Protocol Server name Thunderbird Apple Mail Outlook
POP3 mail.nevis.columbia.edu or
pop3.nevis.columbia.edu 		995 with SSL/TLS 995 with SSL 995, use SSL
IMAP mail.nevis.columbia.edu or
imap.nevis.columbia.edu 		993 with SSL/TLS 993 with SSL 993, use SSL
SMTP mail.nevis.columbia.edu or
smtp.nevis.columbia.edu 		587 with STARTTLS or
465 with SSL/TLS 		465 with TLS/SSL 587, use SSL

The reason to use ports 587 (or 465 for SMTPS) is that many sites have set up firewalls that block off port 25.
