Ports on the Nevis Mail Server

This is a quick guide to configuring a graphical mail reader for the Nevis mail server. If need more details, try the configuring alpine or configure mail guides.

Mail Protocol Server name Standard port
(no encryption, not recommended)
Port to use with TLS Port to use with SSL
POP3 mail.nevis.columbia.edu or
pop3.nevis.columbia.edu
110 995 995
IMAP mail.nevis.columbia.edu or
imap.nevis.columbia.edu
143 993 993
SMTP mail.nevis.columbia.edu or
smtp.nevis.columbia.edu
25 (or 587) 25 (or 587) 465

When trying this out, try the TLS values first; select TLS if your mail reader offers the option, SSL if it doesn't. If TLS doesn't work for SMTP (e.g., Outlook Express), try SSL (SMTPS) over port 465.

The mail server will offer TLS on the "standard" ports of 110, 143, and 25 anyway; some mail readers can take advantage of this. The reason to use ports 587 (or 465 for SMTPS) is that many sites have set up firewalls that block off port 25.
