Lain Brewer - Summer 2023 Research Journal

Week of 5/29/23 (SRI started on 5/30):

Week of 6/5/23:

    • continue work on presentation
  • Tuesday 6/6:
    • finished/gave presentation #1
    • brief overview of plots with Jooyun
    • new project from Kaya
  • Wednesday 6/7:
    • continued reading cicerone
    • presented at joint meeting
    • checked air quality index many, many times
  • Thursday 6/8
    • read cicerone
    • created spreadsheet of HE (VHE?) UHE, actually srcs from the infamous, 4-page-long, table 1 of the first LHASSO catalogue
      • according to Cero, purple is not a good color for a spreadsheet, so it's going to be green I now insist on purple hindsight text
  • Friday 6/9
    • finish reading cicerone
    • start looking at LHASSO LHAASO with 2 A's srcs and associations
    • meet with Jooyun to continue learning about Fermi analysis
      • record vals from last week and confirm what we already did. Did we more than query the data? YES, yes we did
    • Shared spreadsheet, Kaya approved
Week of 6/12/23
  • Monday 6/12
    • attempted to continue fermi analysis, Computers Against Lain's Research (CALR) created substantial pushback
      • fermipy wasn't installed where it needed to be so could not complete TS map/spectral analysis jupyter notebook
    • read LHAASO catalogue paper, highlighted the good stuff
    • realized there was a third table, new update for the spreadsheet
      • sad sad days, T eV sources are not, in fact, G eV sources, spreadsheet fixes needed
  • Tuesday 6/13
    • Gabe has created a cursed environment (his words) just for this! fermipy is up and running, but this time on nustar computer, suitably named pevatron
    • prepared for fermi analysis redo with Jooyun
      • created pevatron directory
      • moved files from nevis to pevatron
      • downloaded ph and spacecraft data files
    • met with Jooyun to set up and complete analysis
    • created/gave presentation #2 about LHAASO catalogue
  • Wednesday 6/14
    • re-ran fermi analysis
    • started doc to understand/remember fermi analysis
    • gave presentation #2 at joint meeting
  • Thursday 6/15
    • visited nevis, long but pretty train ride
    • fixed TeV and GeV cols (I think)
    • worked on fermi analysis doc
    • attempt #1 to graph LHAASO sources (in case you couldn't tell, it fails)
  • Friday 6/16
    • finished up fermi analysis
    • found count density for LHAASO sources, higher dN/dE means easier to see by telescope
    • attempt #2 to graph LHAASO sources (also fails, those damn coordinate systems trippin me up)
Week of 6/19/23
  • Monday 6/19 -- no work, federal holiday
  • Tuesday 6/20
    • worked on presentation #3
      • cleaned up significance plots covered in a mountain of source names
      • made sure I understood fermi plots
    • met with Jooyun
    • gave presentation, there was feedback
      • high TS could be from something with lower energies? maybe (probably) not correct It is correct. More counts at lower energies make fitting easier/more confident so TS is higher
      • SED is very confident in comparison to published data, too confident
      • UNITS!!!! and ROUNDING!!!
  • Wednesday 6/21
    • attempted to figure out what was happening with my higher TS values and low SED uncertainty
    • met with Kaya and Luca, no Jooyun
      • crash course on dN/dE and integral energy flux
      • HW: find out relationship between CR E flux and gamma ray E flux
    • gave presentation at group meeting
      • UNITS! again
      • future discussion of main project
    • met with Kaya, Luca and Jooyun
      • LHAASO is all the rage
      • political physics, making deals with the russians
    • met with Jooyun
      • explained high TS and low uncertainty
        • more counts at lower E so more confident
        • less time used in other studies so more uncertainty
        • bin large/use catalogue binning because less counts per bin is meaningless. There is so much uncertainty that it's useless
  • Thursday 6/22
    • started program to calculated integrated energy flux. First python program, let's go!!!!
    • met with Reshmi
      • make butterfly graph(?) of the power law over energy range of telescope
      • next source unclear
  • Friday 6/23
    • finished program to calculate integrated energy flux
    • fixed count density using modified program
    • met with Reshmi and Ruo
      • new advice: more practice with Crab and non-UHE LHAASO source
    • met with Jooyun
      • disagreed with new source directions
      • went over code for fermi analysis
Week of 6/26/23
  • Monday 6/26
    • went through fermi code and examples from Fermi Summer School to understand and prepare for writing advanced analysis code
    • began presentation #4
    • slacked kaya what Reshmi and Ruo said, he disagreed
  • Tuesday 6/27
    • finished up presentation #4
    • met with Reshmi
      • hold off on source, look at the spread of catalogue sources
        • SED over telescope energy range, butterfly plot?
        • histogram of TS values for both telescopes
        • N0 vs index or index of each source
    • met with Kaya and Chuck
      • want to go ahead with sources so plots can be used for genus test
    • gave presentation #3
      • reaaaaaally, really, really need to double check numbers and units
      • 3 times and 3 things that were incorrect/missing
  • Wednesday 6/28
    • met with Reshmi and Kaya
      • go through srcs for picture of the population
      • need to really understand the columns in the table
      • make tables:
        • TS vs gamma
        • butterfly plot!!!
        • R39 plot
      • do basic analysis for Luca's genus test
    • gave presentation #4
    • began cleaning data, separating by telescope
  • Thursday 6/29
    • continued cleaning data

    • gave presentation
  • Thursday 7/6
    • worked on code for butterfly plots
      • only used error in normalization OR gamma, not both
  • Friday 7/7
    • Gabe gave me basics for butterfly plots with error in both norm and gamma
    • refined presentation #5 (LHAASO Source Population V1)for Reshmi and added gamma error only plots
Week of 7/10/23

    • worked on making both error butterfly code work
    • met with Kaya
      • suggestions for presentation changes
  • Tuesday 7/11

    • continued editing the presentation
    • gave presentation
  • Wednesday 7/12
    • worked a bit more on presentation

    • figured out how to delete sources
    • figured out how to use screens
    • attempted two source finding methods
      • deleting after fit
      • deleting before fit
    • deleted only one source in before fit scenario and three in after fit
    • attended LHAASO session at veritas Cali meeting (from Zoom)
      • They used some of my plots!!! I'm a scientist👩‍🔬
    • added G eV counterparts to table finally. Honestly I put it off for too long and that's on me
  • Friday 7/14
    • realized the source I deleted in before fit scenario didn't exist, so will redo smarter this time
    • the after scenario was not running well, so terminated
    • edited pipeline script to find sources, removing:
      • '4FGL J1023.0-5745'
      • '4FGL J1057.9-5227'
      • '4FGL J1055.7-6028'
    • ran using nohup
      • [1] 17774
Week of 7/17/2
  • Monday 7/17
    • Touched base with Jooyun
      • should run basic analysis before doing any advanced analysis

        • the J0007 analysis is out
    • started presentation #6
    • reran Wd2, deleting src after basic analysis
