How to turn off Java in your web browser

As of Oct-2010, Java has become a leading method of attacks on desktop computer systems:

If you don't use a site or application that requires you to run Java from your browser, it's strongly recommended that you turn it off. If you must use it on your system at Nevis, please consider turning it off on any computers you have at home.

Always be cautious about visiting social networking sites (such as Facebook) or other popular sites (such as Amazon or NY Times). Never mindlessly click on a link to install something unless you know what it is!

Turn off Java in Internet Explorer

  1. From the Tools menu, or the Tools drop-down in the upper right, select Internet Options... .
  2. Click the Programs tab, and then click Manage Add-ons.
  3. Highlight Java Plug-in.
  4. Click Disable (located under "Settings" in version 7).
  5. Click OK twice.

Turn of Java in Firefox

  2. Click the "Plugins" tab
  3. Scroll down to the Java Plug-in and click the "Disable" button. If you don't see a Java plug-in, then it's not installed.

  2. Click the "Under the Hood" tab
  3. Under "Privacy," click "Content Settings..."
  4. Choose "Plug-ins" on the left hand side, and then "Disable individual plug-ins."
  5. If you see "Java" in this list, and it's not already disabled, click "Disable" under it. It will turn gray, and "Disable" will change to "Enable."
