NSF Scientific Research Ethics Training

Here are the steps needed to complete this training course. Allow at least one hour to complete the course; two hours or more is likely.

  • Click on the "Register" button (assuming you have never registered with CITI before)

  • In the "Search for organization" field, start typing "Columbia University". You'll be able to select it after just a few characters. After that, click on "Continue to Step 2".

  • Fill out your name. For your email address, put your Columbia UNI. Continue to Step 3.

  • Create an account name and password. I wouldn't make a big deal about the password, since you'll probably never come back to this site again. Pro tip: If you type apg on any of the Linux systems at Nevis, you'll get some random passwords you can cut-and-paste. Put anything you like for the security question and answer (bear in mind you'll probably never visit this site again). Continue to Step 4.

  • Start typing "United States" in the country field until you can select it. Continue to Step 5.

  • Click "No" to the CEU credit question. Click that you don't want CITI to contact you later. Continue to Step 6.

  • Fill out the required fields on this page. Use your UNI for the email address. Your role in research is "Student Researcher". For the office phone, use the phone in room 118: 914-591-2867. Continue to Step 7.

  • On the next page, select "Responsible Conduct of Research Training".

  • On the next page, select "Physical Sciences".

  • Click "Finalize Registration".

  • Complete the Assurance statement. click on the first option at the bottom of the page (you're taking the course for yourself; if you're not, re-read that page!)

  • For each of the topics listed, go over the material.
    • At the bottom of the topic page, take the quiz if there is one.
    • After the quick, select "Go back to the gradebook for this course."

  • Click "RCR Physical Sciences".

  • Click on the Assurance Form link, and agree to the terms.

  • Go through each topic in turn.
    • The videos go over the same material as the text. There's no real need to watch them.
    • At the end of each page, take the quiz (if there is one)
    • At the bottom each quiz results, select "Take the next ELECTIVE module" unless you need to re-take the quiz to get a higher score.

  • At the end of the last topic, select "Go to Post-Course Completion Options".

  • Click on "Completion Report".

  • Print the PDF file you'll get:
    • At Nevis, select the printer "bw-research" if you don't have a preferred printer.
    • Save paper by selecting "two-sided" or "duplex" printing.
    • Give a copy of the certificate to Amy Garwood in room 106* so we have a record that you took the course.
