NSF Scientific Research Ethics Training

Here are the steps needed to complete this training course. Allow at least one hour to complete the course; two hours or more is likely.

  • Click on "Register Here" (assuming you have never registered with CITI before)

  • On the Participating Institutions menu, select "Columbia University"

  • Fill out the remaining fields on the page to create an account for yourself.
    • You are not requesting CME / CEU credits
    • You are not an IRB or IACUC Coordinator. Select "No, I am not interested at any price"
    • You don't need to take a course survey

  • Click "Submit" to to go to the Columbia University Information page.
    • If you don't have a Columbia University UNI e-mail address (e.g., you're a summer student), use your regular e-mail address
    • For "Department", put Physics
    • If you don't know or have a formal role at Nevis, select "Research Assistant"
    • If you don't have your own phone number, use Nevis': 914-591-8100
    • If you don't have a Columbia University UNI (or you don't know what that is), use 123CU

  • On the next page, select "Responsible Conduct of Research Training"

  • Complete the Assurance statement. lick on the first option at the bottom of the page (you're taking the course for yourself; if you're not, re-read that page!)

  • For each of the topics listed, go over the material.
    • At the bottom of the topic page, take the quiz if there is one.
    • After the quick, select "Go back to the gradebook for this course."

  • On the next page, select "Physical Sciences"

  • On the next page, select "No" (you don't want to affiliate with another institution)

  • On the line with "RCR Physical Sciences, Basic Course" click Enter

  • Go through each topic in turn.
    • The videos go over the same material as the text. There's no real need to watch them.
    • At the end of each page, take the quiz (if there is one)
    • After that, select "Go to the gradebook for this course"

  • At the end of the last topic, select "Go to Main Page" as instructed.

  • On the "RCR Physical Sciences, Basic Course" line, select Print.
    • At Nevis, select the printer "bw-research" if you don't have a preferred printer.
    • Save paper by selecting "two-sided" or "duplex" printing.
    • Give a copy of the certificate to Amy Garwood in room 106 so we have a record that you took the course.
