NSF Scientific Research Ethics Training

Here are the steps needed to complete this training course. Allow at least one hour to complete the course. Note: The exact procedure changes from year to year, but the basics still apply: register; take the RCR course; send us the completion report.

  • Click on the "Register" button (assuming you have never registered with CITI before)

  • In the "Select Your Organization Affiliation" field, start typing "Columbia University". You'll be able to select "Columbia University (SSO)" after just a few characters. Agree to the Terms of Service, then affirm you're a Columbia University affiliate. Continue to SSO Login.

  • Enter your Columbia UNI.

  • On the next page, select "Responsible Conduct of Research" (or RCR).

  • If you see a choice between subject areas, pick "Physical Sciences" or the closest equivalent.

  • Agree to the terms on the Assurance Form page.

  • Go through each topic in turn.
    • The videos go over the same material as the text. There's no real need to watch them.
    • At the end of each page, take the quiz (if there is one)
    • At the bottom each of the quiz results, select "Take the next REQUIRED/ELECTIVE module" unless you need to re-take the quiz to get a higher score.

  • At the end of the last topic, select "Go to Post-Course Completion Options".

  • Click on "Completion Report".

  • Save the PDF file you'll get.
    • If you're working remotely:
    • If you're at Nevis:
      • Select the printer "bw-research" if you don't have a preferred printer.
      • Save paper by selecting "two-sided" or "duplex" printing.
      • Give a copy of the certificate to Amy Garwood in room 106 so we have a record that you took the course.
